The handle is what turns a product into /products/blue-running-shoe. It is generated from the title when a product is created and then keeps whatever it was given, including the numeric suffixes an import leaves behind.
Changing it in bulk is straightforward. What needs care is everything pointing at the old URL: search results, backlinks, ads, printed material.
Handle operations
- Find and replace — remove an import suffix or an obsolete brand fragment.
- Add to the beginning or end — where a scheme genuinely calls for it.
- Remove text — strip repeated words.
- Change to — set a specific handle on a narrow selection.
- Set to blank — let Shopify regenerate the handle from the title.
Clean up import-generated handles — carefully, in batches.
You will be redirected to the Shopify app store.
Finding the handles worth fixing
- By handle — contains, does not contain, is equal to.
- By title — when the handle no longer resembles the product name.
- By creation date — to isolate the import that produced them.
- By vendor after a brand rename.
A worked example: strip “-1” suffixes from an import
- Filter: handle contains “-1”.
- Preview the list and remove any product whose handle legitimately ends in a number.
- Editor: URL handle → find “-1”, replace with an empty value.
- Run it, then add redirects in Shopify from the old handles to the new ones.
Redirects are not optional
Shopify does not create a redirect for you when a handle changes: the old URL simply stops working. Before a bulk handle change, export the current handles so you have the old values, and plan the redirects.
For a catalog with real search traffic, this is the one bulk edit worth doing in small, deliberate batches.
