Bulk edit tax settings on Shopify

Whether a variant charges tax, and which tax code it uses, set across a category in one task instead of variant by variant.

You will be redirected to the Shopify app store.

Tax settings are per variant, which means a catalog with mixed categories — clothing, food, gift cards, services — needs different settings on different products, and gets them wrong after every import.

The consequences show up at checkout and in your filings, so it is worth fixing as a deliberate task rather than product by product when someone notices.

Tax operations

  • Charge tax — switch the taxable flag on for a filtered selection.
  • Don’t charge tax — switch it off, for zero-rated categories.
  • Tax code — set the code your tax service expects.
  • Both settings sit on the variant, so filters at variant level give the finest control.

Set the taxable flag for a whole category in one pass.

Scoping tax changes

  • By product type — usually the field that maps to a tax treatment.
  • By taxable — find everything currently set one way.
  • By collection — when a category is managed as a collection.
  • By is gift card — gift cards are a common exception.
  • By vendor for supplier-specific ranges.

A worked example: zero-rate a category

  1. Filter: product type is “Children’s footwear”, taxable is equal to true.
  2. Editor: tax → don’t charge tax.
  3. Preview the variants and confirm the category is complete.
  4. Run it, then place a test order to confirm the checkout total.

Check the checkout, not just the field

Shopify calculates tax from the taxable flag, the tax code and your store’s tax configuration together. After a bulk change, a single test order tells you more than re-reading the product list.

Tax rules are jurisdiction-specific — this page describes the fields the app can change, not advice on which treatment applies to your products.
