What is an SEO title?

The version of your product name written for a search result rather than for a product page.

The SEO title (page title) and meta description are the fields search engines read when building a result listing. On Shopify they are separate from the product title and description, and fall back to them when empty.

Why write them separately

  • A product title serves the product page; a search result competes with nine other results.
  • The fallback repeats your store name and can truncate awkwardly.
  • A meta description is your only control over the text under the link.
  • Search engines may still rewrite them — but an empty field guarantees you have no say at all.

Practical rules

  • Keep the SEO title short enough not to truncate, with the important words first.
  • Write per category rather than one line for the whole store.
  • Say something specific: fit, material, delivery, returns.
  • Never leave both fields empty on a page you want traffic to.

Doing it at catalog scale

Filtering for products where the SEO title is empty and filling them per product type is one bulk task per category, which is the difference between a job that gets done and one that stays on a list.

Bulk Product Edit by MITS edits this field in bulk across a filtered part of your catalog, with a log and a one-click revert.

You will be redirected to the Shopify app store.
